The Block' Reveals the Winning Freedom Kitchen Design
Couples Showcase Designs That Will Sell Houses!
August 2011 — Following the grueling bed, bath and living renovations, Channel 9’s “The Block” turned up the heat in the kitchen last night pitting contestants against each other in a four-way battle for kitchen design dominance. Revealed last night, August 7, it was Josh and Jenna from House 1, who took top honours.
Seeking professional design advice and the latest products from Freedom Kitchens,
contestants were judged on creativity, functionality and total transformation. Susan Hasler of Freedom Kitchens says all four designs were original, interesting and well planned, catering to the specific needs of each couple.
Although a tough decision, Susan agreed on the winning kitchen chosen by judges John McGrath (McGrath Real Estate) and Neale Whitaker (Editor-in-Chief, Belle Magazine), saying “Josh and Jenna utilised the space most effectively and brought together a brilliant design concept that is contemporary and fresh and will no doubt be a focal point for buyers at auction.”
Each couple showcased key kitchen trends and practical solutions that will add value to any home:
• Josh and Jenna: Brighten the home
A simple yet effective tip for designing a kitchen for sale is to keep it bright. Susan says Alaskan Gloss cabinetry in white combined with an elegant CaesarStone® benchtop in Snow is the perfect choice for Josh and Jenna’s home for creating a spacious feel.
“They incorporated clever lighting and natural light for instant appeal. Freedom’s streamlined channel handle and Laminex Satin heartwood overhead cabinets add a modern twist whilst reflective mirror kickboards create a floating effect and complement the stainless steel appliances.”
• Polly and Waz: Two-Toned Space
Two-toned themed kitchens are bang on trend, delivering kitchens with depth and interest. The trick is to use complementary colours and textures that work together for a cohesive space.
“Polly and Waz contrasted black Alaskan Gloss cabinetry with horizontal timber grain and tied the space together by installing Portofiino benchtops in Bianco,” says Susan.
• Katrina and Amie: European Styling
Taking influence from the latest trends from Europe, Katrina and Amie have pulled off a stunning black and white galley style kitchen that is glamorous and functional. “Cube cabinetry with thick borders that frame the section are one of the hottest trends we’re seeing right now and Katrina and Amie have used this design to stunning effect. It’s the perfect fit for the style-conscious, executive couple they are hoping to appeal to.”
This striking kitchen is beautifully balanced with subtle skyline drawer handles for a streamlined finish. Hettich’s soft closing systems – fitted for style, comfort, ergonomics and slim design add a final touch of elegance.
• Tania and Rod: Create an Open Kitchen
A surefire way to impress potential buyers is to open up your kitchen space, creating an area that evolves from dining room to work area to a space to gather and entertain. “The open style design is high on the priority list for prospective buyers. In Rod and Tania’ case, it also provides a wonderful opportunity to showcase their stunning stainless steel benchtop, custom made in their sheet metal workshop .”
Keeping kitchen clutter to a minimum is crucial in any open plan design, so including items like pullout pantry drawers from Hettich is a great decision as they help to maximise storage space. Susan also adds that by installing a kitchen island, even more storage space can be added. It also creates a buffer between the living and cooking areas.
